The combination lock is generally approved by the Post. Manufacturers and sellers of mailboxes must therefore verify the approval of their product to facilitate mail delivery and optimize mail security.
Mailbox locks vary by country. Some countries even prohibit locking mailboxes to facilitate access to mail. A mailbox is rarely sold alone; it is always provided with the mailbox and the corresponding key. A mailbox costs on average €30. However, some more sophisticated models can exceed €100.
Mailbox Locking Operation
A combination lock only opens from the outside. It contains all the elements of a classic lock, in a simplified manner. To open a cam lock, simply insert the key into the lock and turn it. The rotation activates the pins of the lock. If the key matches, the bolt (or hook) is unlocked. The movement of the key then locks the mailbox. The rotating bolt is positioned against a load present on the mailbox structure to lock access.
All approved mailbox locks can be opened by the mail carrier using a master key anywhere. This key activates the pins of the lock so that the lock unlocks. This system is similar to that used by some professionals equipped with technical keys. The mailbox lock can be installed on the wall or embedded in the door of the mailbox.
